The Complex Mindz podcast!! <3

This podcast, which will continue into the 2022-2023 school year, I created with my podcast partner at the beginning of January 2022 to discuss different mental health illnesses and disorders. We are trying to break the stigma around mental health and create a more positive and accurate lens for the disorders. This is personally my favorite thing I have ever done for journalism, and I am so happy it has been able to reach a variety of different audiences.

COMPLEX MINDZ EP. 1: ADHD

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD, has many misconceptions and wrong associations attached to it. ADHD has been labeled as soley the 'fidgeting and not bring able to focus disorder,' but this could not be further from the truth. It affects those who have the disorder in many different aspects, like forgetting to go to the bathroom or not being able to complete homework. In this episode, hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire discuss with their anonymous guest how they were diagnosed, how the disorder affects them, and some ways the deal with ADHD.

COMPLEX MINDZ EP. 2: DEPRESSION

Depression is often used as an umbrella term by many to describe their sadness but depression is much more than just feeling sad. Although there are signs of depression, it is best to be diagnosed with the disorder before claiming you certainly have it, as it can be damaging to the actual meaning of the disorder. Depression can affect those who live with the disorder in ways of not being able to get out of bed or losing appetite and motivation. Hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire discuss with their anonymous guest how depression holds a tight grip over their life and how some of their coping strategies.

COMPLEX MINDZ EP. 3: TRICHOTILLOMANIA

Trichotillomania is often labeled as just a hair-pulling disorder, but its true effects are much more than that. To the complusive behaviors and thoughts to having to deal with becoming bald on spots of your head, it is challenging to deal with. Hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire discuss with their anonymous guest how trichotillomania has impacted their life and also their techniques to cope with the disorder. There are many misconceptions and improper portrayls of trichotillomania in the media, but spreading awareness on the disorder can hopefully combat the harmful assumptions.

This ep. won an award!

This episode is built off of the ideas hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire discussed in the previous episode. Guest speaker, Ellen Crupi, who deals with trichotillomania, shares her story with the disorder and how it influenced her line of work. She now works with others who also deal with BFRBs (Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors). Crupi shares the techniques that helped her get a handle on the disorder and eventually how she also was able to get into recovery. Trichotillomania is something that many can deal with, and Ellen's story is just one example of how the disorder can manifest.

COMPLEX MINDZ EP. 5: SELF-HARM

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode may be triggering to some listeners, and should listen with caution. Self-harm is a topic that many chose to pretend does not happen, but is something that affects many. It may not always be as clear who is suffering from it, as self-harm comes in many different forms, but some behaviors can be possible indicators. Hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire discuss with their anonymous guest how they have dealt with self-harm and eventually got help to help combat it. Along with getting help, they share some alternative techniques that have helped them resist their self-harm urges, but those techniques will not work for all as everyone's self-harm behaviors and actions vary from each other.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 2 EP. 1: SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode may be triggering to some listeners, and should listen with caution. I produced this episode as it was released in September, which is Suicide Prevention Month, and I wanted to shed light on a more personal level of what suicide is, how it affects someone and the thoughts that go through someone's head. Suicidal ideation and acting on those thoughts is something that is not often discussed, and starting conversations around it is very important to create a more accepting mental health atmosphere.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 2 EP. 2: SUICIDAL THOUGHTS PT. 2

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode may be triggering to some listeners, and should listen with caution. This episode was a continuation of the first suicidal thoughts episode as I wanted to put a greater emphasis on our podcast's suicidal prevention awareness coverage. Although we interviewed the same guest as before, this episode was more of a continuation of the previous episode than an entirely different interview altogether.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 2 EP. 3: ORTHOREXIA

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode may be triggering to some listeners, and should listen with caution. Many eating disorders are not known in the public eye, as only a couple are even recognized in the DSM. Orthorexia is an eating disorder not many knows of, and although is a real eating disorder, it is not recognized in the DSM. Before interviewing our guest, I was not aware that this eating disorder existed, and I am so grateful for getting to become more aware of the different types of eating disorders that exist.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 2 EP. 4: GET TO KNOW US

As we have produced content for this podcast for 2 seasons now, we wanted to give our listeners a clear idea of why we created the podcast and more background behind who we are. This is one of my favorite projects I have ever created in Journalism, and me and my partner wanted to emphasis our love for our podcast, and what it means to us,

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 2 EP. 5: BULIMIA

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode may be triggering to some listeners, and should listen with caution. Bulimia was a part of the eating disorder coverage that was the main focus of this season, and although this eating disorder is a more well-known one, many do not understand the true grasp it can have on individuals. Our guest shared their experience with Bulimia and stated some misconceptions that are attached to the disorder.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 2 EP. 6: OSFED

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode may be triggering to some listeners, and should listen with caution. Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) is a type of eating disorder that many are often diagnosed with if they have multiple traits from different eating disorders. This was the last episode in our eating disorder-focused season, and we were so incredibly excited to end it on an eating disorder we both had not really much about before.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 3 EP. 1: MENTAL HEALTH IN MUSIC

This was the first episode we produced for our last and final season, and is up to date one of our favorite episodes we have produced. With our guest speaker and fellow podcaster, Izaan Masud, we delved into how artists incorporate their own mental health struggles within their music, and how it helps those who listen to the songs understand and connect to their own experiences better.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 3 EP. 2: MENTAL HEALTH IN EDUCATION

To continue with the same trend of discussion within this season, we wanted to expand upon broader topics that we have never had as the central focus in our episodes before. With our anonymous guest in ep. 2, we broke down how educational systems need to provide better mental health resources, and that there should be a uniform standard when it comes to education instructors respecting individualized mental health plans.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 3 EP. 3: SURVIVING SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode may be triggering to some listeners, and should listen with caution. Within the span of our mental health podcast, we have discussed briefly ourselves and our guests surviving suicidal thoughts, but never in a focused manner. In this episode, we expanded upon what it means to survive suicidal thoughts and the processes it takes to integrate back into society's demands.

COMPLEX MINDZ SEASON 3 EP. 4: SIGNING OFF

This podcast has been one of my favorite projects that I have been a part of, and I will forever hold it dear in my heart. The mental health coverage that I feel we provided to our publication is extremely important to me, and I hope the extensive coverage will continue even after our podcast. In our final episode, we recall all of our impacts and best moments throughout the course of Complex Mindz, and thank our listeners for sticking by our sides throughout the past year and a half! :)

The Student Scoop podcast!!

This was a podcast I also conducted with my podcast partner in crime that discussed school-related topics and issues. Those featured on the podcast were students or those who worked closely with the school, who voiced their opinions about specific events at school. This podcast ran from September 22 to December 17 of 2021.

STUDENT SCOOP EP. 1: THE DRESS CODE

The debate surrounding the dress code at schools is a very controversial topic. Most agree that it is sexist and targets young girls in the way of sexualizing their bodies. They are forced to cover up and told this is for 'their protection.' Hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire speak with guest speaker Samantha Kosman, a junior who had specifically experienced the unfair targetting of the dress code at Carlmont High School.

STUDENT SCOOP EP. 2: POLICE PRESENCE AT CARLMONT

Police are heavily utilized in society but not always in critical situations. There is a debate about the presence of police on school campuses, and discussed immensely, with the main point of discussion being whether they are providing safety for students or causing more home than protection. Hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire speak with guest speaker Eric Gonzales, a School Resource Officer (SRO) for Carlmont a couple of years ago, and his opinions on the matter.

STUDENT SCOOP EP. 3: HOMECOMING

Homecoming is a traditional back-to-school event that most high schools have after the first couple of months back in October. Those schools also usually have formal attire, which is the norm and expectation for Homecoming. However, Carlmont has an informal attire for their Homecoming, making some question its organization. Hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire speak with guest speaker Amelia Clevenger, an Associated Student Body (ASB) Dance Commission member, to figure out the process behind Homecoming and how the dress attire became what it is.

STUDENT SCOOP EP. 4: FUNDING IN HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

As the football team is the most well-known and hyped-up school sports team at schools around the country, many think sports funding is mainly for the football team instead of other sports. However, that is not the truth, as hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire learned when speaking to guest speaker Jo Kupens, who is in her second year of the Booster Board president. Even though most sports get funding if they request it, there is still confusion with the dance team at Carlmont and how they are recognized by the Booster Club but not provided any funds.

STUDENT SCOOP EP. 5: THE STRESS OF FINALS

Stress is something that many encounter and students are not the exceptions. During finals, that stress is heightened and experienced at a greater amount. Hosts Catherine Eikelbarner and Lucy Lopshire speak with Dr. Jonathan Horowitz, who is the CEO and founder of the San Francisco Stress and Anxiety Center. Horowitz discussed the stigma surrounding stress and how we should not let stress dictate our decisions. Eikelbarner and Lopshire share their thoughts on Horowitz's statements and how stress revolved around finals needs to a more embraced and accepted event that all experience.
